ritadi
i heard of her first time i think in 1966 when chhorda came to shillong after his studies. i think there was one letter of her marriage with tapanda.
i saw her first time during my first year on the day of holi. we went to her residence behind our hostel. i distinctly remember tapanda ritadi with their child in their lap. they gave us some sandesh.
they came to campus and was residing in staff quarters. i was student and saw more of her in the boys hostel participating in chess among others. vvmenon and ramakrishna were excellent players. i learnt quite a lot from them. ramakrishna gave me lot of books of chess puzzles and i used read them at night before sleeping.
during my mstat i was fond of stuti and spent lot of time with her and ravi. ritadi asked stuti and me for dinner one evening.
after my isidays i joined org baroda and i used to come frequently to calcutta but not on campus but to chhorda and ma living outside. once when i was there ritadi came for some reason and i opened the door. this time i introduced her to ma saying that she was chhorda's classmate but my friend. she did not like it. during his time whenever i was in kolkata i used spend lot of time in csu with all my friends, shibdasda subhasda mukulbabu rajgopal etc. i also used to meet ritadi once in a while. i was fond of her.
after 2 3 job change i went to bahrain. after bahrain i stayed about two months at calcutta. i used to swim in the campus and take walks or visit some of my juniors or seniors at isi. then i took a job and was in bombay. it was one violent storm when i saw arab sea swelled up hitting the road at marine drive. it was very scaring night. i used to live in marine drive a few yards from the sea flooding the road. i wanted to express myself and wrote a letter to ritadi. after about one year i got married in calcutta in May 1983. In my marriage chhorda called all he knew familiar with me, i also invited some personally among them ritadi and subhasda belonged. subhasda did not come. at csu i was very close to subhasda.
after many years i came to live in calcutta for two plus years. i was staying in south kolkata mudiali. on a diwali night she came to my place and spent many hours. after few more years ma died in early 91. even before that ritadi was taking interest in chhorda's welfare. she gave one maid to my mother. that maid did not leave after ma's demise immediately. she left after a year or so.
i went to calcutta a few more times until 2000 when i left india permanently to settle down in US.
2012 May, I visited chhorda in the hospital. after seeing me, he said that he had not informed none about his illness and gave two phone numbers to chhordi to inform. they were of ritadi and tondlu misra. i did not go next day to hospital in the evening and did not meet ritadi. I was very busy doing something that came to no use for chhorda. I tried to contact ritadi but she informed me that she was busy and cannot meet me. she gave me phone number of pijushda.
one morning without her invitation i went and met her. although chhorda asked me to go to isi or meet someshda; i did not go. I spent about one hour with ritadi and i also met tapanda. she was making preparation to go for marriage josheph's son.
shortly afterwards chhorda died. not very long after tapanda too died. i did not know how i came to know of this but asked chhordi to visit her. i started calling ritadi off and on. she was very busy with her tight schedule of activities. she told me of some incidents about chhorda. after one sickness chhorda invited some of his friends for dinner. smaritda was recommending some tonic and chhorda said that were he not employed by that company chhorda could not take his recommendation seriously. chhorda was very gentle always even though he may not sound so; she meant to say, even when chhorda abruptly contradicted. ritadi once went with a proposal of marriage for chhorda and met ma. she asked ritadi to talk to chhorda personally. ritadi tried to do that several times; but chhorda avoided her. then ritadi went to meet him at his residence. chhorda opened the door and said point blank that he was not at all inclined. ritadi was very exhausted; chhorda did not even invited her inside.
recently ritadi came with tinku and visited me. i am going through some sickness that i am unable to digest. i invited kanti and sayeed. i was very ill and could not attend them at all. even now i am not sure of myself for next 24 hours outside my residence. Kanti and sayeed took them to niagara falls on behalf of me.
