kashmir
i was not at all interested in politics and only looked at news paper while in india to read some article that generally read by me only since i too subscribed.
i did not know much of kashmir when i was student and came to know of the same when the newly wed couple das babu and purnima boudi went to kashmir for honeymoon. many a days i spent at das babu's room looking at pictures of dal lake pines and snows and came to be aware of kashmir. they got some beautiful tables made of wood that perhaps belonged there along with some pashmina clothes.
as a married man in delhi we used to be visited every year by some kashmiri sales person with carpet clothes etc. i enjoyed their companion staying at home.
i was in noida and my office colleague gyanendra used to visit frequently some place called vaishno devi that i had never heard before. i decided to go there with my family of four. my son was about 1 year old. for help i took along brij kishore with me. we reached jammu katra around afternoon. there was some crowd control before the climb; since six miles to the top and back could not accommodate all unless controlled. we took a pittoo to carry my daughter a mule for my wife and son. however the mule was used by me and son. brij kishore traveled with the rest. late night we reached the top. it was cold. rugs were distributed to get some warmth. it was extremely strenuous. batches of twenty were sent to visit the cave that had an aperture of 18 inch round hole, into a stream flowed at ankle deep. then there was patch of color coins and flowers of worship. the other end of cave was blasted to make wide exit. by early morning the ordeal is over. after some breakfast we proceeded down the hill. the entire journey is lighted as bright as dayven at night. below the hill some cassette video publishing company had made arrangement to feed excellent food. our journey back to delhi were already booked for next day. symbolically it is visit to my birth.
all my stay in delhi and noida as a young family man i was supported by my landlord's family. brij kishore was also their man.
next morning there was a hick up. i was informed at the government guesthouse of our night stay that there is no service from katra to jammu station following some strike. eventually it sorted out and we reached noida safe though tired.
the divine journey was indeed divine we had no illness. i also learned something that there was no way to tell a muslim who facilitated millions of hindu pilgrims who belong permanently belonged to this region.
for me shyama prasad mukherjee is very complicated character throughout his life. calcutta university demise started with him as VC and afterwards he headed the demolition squad for bengali character. I was never involved in politics in my entire life even while each and every person in my student life were political. i avoided them and they never included me a part of them.
as a young man i was very disturbed that there is very wrong taking place for decades that indian government doing everything to eliminate kashmiris. LoC is the division of hell and heaven. Kashmiris were prisoner in their own home. the scheme was to drive them away all and make it india. How many kashmiris were killed on daily basis is unaccounted. We listened to stories of false heroes of Indian Soldier Police who gave their life to defend government agenda that is not defensible.
