i lost touch with matthew 4 decades ago. several years back i talked with him over phone. he told me his interest is no longer computer or machine intelligence. he is spiritual and a farmer in kerala. his family consisting of beautiful bengali whom met only once on their marriage. they have son. i am told they have very beautiful residence surrounded by flowers and plants.
those who do not know matthew - he was the most brilliant programmer i met in my life. he is from a family from kerala who are for many centuries catholic priest. uzhrnille. him too started for priesthood but got disillusioned after a decade of pursuit and returned back to tradition school. he was national talent search scholar, physics major, and finally graduated from ISI. among other thing he wrote two compilers - cobol and basic. the cobol compiler was the finest ever produced in India. he also did all the documentations for org system.
when i knew him in baroda his focus of study were machine intelligence general theory of relativity and indian spiritualism as exposed by JK; what jk called ~ awakening of human intelligence. mathew used to think that machine can be as good as human being. we know machine can be better than human being in many sphere; but never they can come ever near to human intelligence. it is impossible to think warren buffett is having the same intellect of edison einstein or bell. or narendra modi having the same intellect that of Nehru. yes it is possible to have machine heading political party and winning election. it is also possible to create a machine as good as warren buffett or exceed his success in share market.
some days back raghu suggested me to read some science fiction and see some movies written by philip k dick. i tried many times to complete even one film of a serial where a machine was developing consciousness motivation and conscience. but machine is limited in its evolution being based on turing machine or equivalently by markov algorithm. it has no ability to revolutionize itself. i have read p k dick when i was young but this time it was impossible exercise. pipe dream.
the unknown absolute or essence at the core of human being is the base for all human being is also creator all by himself. machine can never achieve consciousness of creator. it can only be made similar to some expert like very good driver at most. given that it is after all a turing machine.
