Intelligence
Intelligence – machine or human is extremely limited by nature. We spend life time but … I can talk about myself and must not generalize. I may spend life time till I about without any strength to utter a single syllable, but I am sure I cannot speak anything intelligent. I am thoroughly frustrated about my achievement to be intelligent. Several times I have shown mastery of some subjects relative to my known people but often I have been beaten by my own brother in this game, but I am quite convinced about my superficiality. I am also quite convinced my intelligence for that matter human intelligence is not worth acquiring. It is quite useless pursuit. A dream that never is a reality.
Every one of us with senses however limited but enhanced by machine under the open sky observe millions or trillions sense objects. They may all be thought same – say stars. And each of this object are differentiable by properties say thousands of them. This is huge database.
Now, our first attempt is clustering these huge number of objects into some class. One class is solar system. Can machine be taught to observe sky and identify solar system? Can machine be taught to know more than human know so far and identify more object belonging to solar system? We can program machine to do the same – however far away be the same from sun and whatever the plane of orbit it may have with respect to earth’s orbit around sun. two identified property to look for – the object is orbiting sun, may be taking thousand years to complete and lighted by sun and it is regular. The definition of planet by human.
Objects we learn by listing out properties that we are able to observe. We can cluster them projecting the observer at unlimited distance till they are identifiable cluster. Suppose we are determined to find 100 clusters in our vision of sky – statistically we can arrive at 100 different clusters. Each remain at the same place with respect to the observer at a hypothetical center of the universe. Call them as you like nebula galaxy whatever. 4 or many more dimensions of observations to lesser dimension to even single dimension is possible. To start with I said let us assume we are trying to find 100 clusters. This is single dimension – is not it?
Let us take a facility like Search engine who gives us objects of our search with a bend of mind for profiting by the service provided. It keeps track of the object of search, who is searching for the same and what he or she did with the information. Its commercial interest is to sell this information to potential buyers of these information. He has subscriber list and it is his only source of revenue and motivation to provide this search facility to satisfy our curiosity. This is too machine intelligence very similar to shop keeper who profits by storing goods in the neighborhood collecting them from whole sellers.
Let us now talk about skill. Driving car or plane is acquired skill learned by human. Car and plane are machine indeed. If they too are given all the senses maps and skills in a many dimensional relational tables trained by a human skilled expert – it is indeed so much better. Presumably so. I prefer to be driven rather driving myself!
I am not talking about self-correcting machine, yet.
let me presume what already exist in my automobile. Check light that becomes on when conditions of my car changes from preset. the mechanic finds out what need looking at and rectifies the same. self driven cars have additional responsibility to be picked up from the location. automation can set up a network of location where the car can be serviced. the servicing point can also be automated to a large extent. visual inspection can be automated. the access point of the trouble too may be machine assisted. All these being done to reduce the cost of manual maintenance. Quite frankly human expert today cannot do a job unless assisted by already built in service checkpoints. It is preferred to buy a car perhaps self driven for say 200K miles and or 20 years life.
I am not at all venturing into the question of benefit to human boss the machines serve. I do not know about others but it benefited me for entire lifetime. I am writing this without pen or paper and thought assisted by automation. what is my motivation? Better life style? No boredom. Machine is the greatest and only companion I have. If anyone benefits from my thoughts is not required for me to know. Machine allows me to chose my companion selectively.
