he was 4 years senior to me and was not living in hostel. in m2 there was a new specialization of biostatistics; he and dcrao were two who were enrolled and taught by crrao, the lord of isi.
there was a barren field at 205 btroad. it was cultivated to become a paddy field; them two were found there most of the time. long before that till 1964 there was one person called jbshaldane who started research in genetics in isi but left after some problem with pcm the almighty of isi. tadavis skroy rlbrahmachari and others - some students of haldane taught us biology biochemistry biometry etc. in our bstat years. i suppose all these science branches were set up by him only. he also designed bstat curriculum.
restart was done by crrao with dcrao and ranajit chakraborty while i was in isi. i am not in touch with isi after 1974. i did not enter isi campus after 1983. i did not know what became of biostatistics and its rebirth.
i met ranajit da in 2007 first time at detroit nabc along with moloyghosh and bandana di. after that i met him thrice 2008, 2009 during durga puja - he was priest and once more in 2010 bongomela that took place in columbus oh. i find any big bengali gatherings very suffocating. i do my best to avoid them. iu learnt ranajit da wass doing durga and other puja ever since he was in usa. he was childless. he married bandana di who was a research scholar at isi in one of those science department at isi. they were childless. ranajit da was very mild mannered little boisterous and boasting type. he possibly got highest number of As in bstat. I would not know his intellect but he took time off to mention that he published over thousand research papers etc. several times whenever i met him. once in his office, he talked about dna and genetic link with criminal behaviour of human. given list of all criminals and their genomes it should be possible to their hereditary connections who are not yet criminals but potentially to be. i believe he had his conviction of criminals inherit crime tendency via genes and dna.
for me i once got interested in genetics and hanged around with him to get a human genome listing to make my statistical analysis. by now i do not attribute it is worthwhile research even for worthy cause to prevent cancer or to reduce crime or produce higher iq human or healthy animal babies. of course we have invented genetically engineered mosquito to destroy itself. we have created bacteria that can eat oil sleek etc. we have created all kinds plants and hybrids with mixed attributes. they often tastes strange.
his mentor, crrao is still living and 98 years old now. he still travels to different universities and gives talks on statistics. i came to know of death of ranajit da from ritadi sometime in october or later last year. i could not consume it. he did not look unhealthy at all. i saw him performing puja that took 4/5 hours sessions in morning and evening on multiple days. he also boasted about conducting hindu marriages; i presume they are bengali marriages. he gave the statistics of 28 marriages conducted by him 26 of them were still united. pairs not willing to have a life partner should avoid him.
off and on i would talk to him over phone or email. he gave his reason for shifting to texas was his in laws family; banadanadi her brother and mother can be together. he was at forthwarth but in laws were in houston. he had about no connections with his family. he frequented kolkata and while there he lived in isi guest house even when was staying or visiting isi.
i must mention here that i am no believer of no theory even when a thing magic computer calculate trillion time the same thing without error proving its reliability. i of course have no faith in statistics or genome to predict correctly 95% or more. I am believer of meaning of truth and its infallibility.
rajitda was always smiling content and not sophisticated. He was believer of Puja and he was certain that it bears fruit what one prays for. While doing it comes out of him always when he directs this and that and pray keeping rotation or directions etc. Possibly he really wished to die with colon cancer and postoperative complication. Or he perhaps thinking had he done the prayer in a different manner he could have changed the manner he died. He would remain certainly a pujari in his next birth. He aimed at perfection. He aimed at 20 out of 20 As in BStat. That only mattered and nothing else. 1600 papers mattered and nothing else.
