Rumi

I saw her last about 16 years back when she stayed with us along with her parents for a week.

I saw her first in 1984 when she visited Delhi along with her parents and younger sister. She was then 5 years old. Our residence in Delhi was an old shabby place. She was very imaginative and asked me to lift her and show the inside of a basin. She possibility expected to see some spirit. They lived in UK. I had never been in UK.

When I was in Kolkata they lived in Kolkata for about two years. She studied in some american school in Kolkata. She used to sing Rabindra Sangeet with a melodious voice. Her parents were unnecessarily sophisticated and complex and imaginative of different kind. They were great show off. It is difficult living for her without choice. They had circle of friends in Kolkata; they were too of same kind. Her father was pathologist in Bellevue Nursing Home then; and he is mortally scared of Pollution. All the windows were forever closed to keep away polluted atmosphere of Kolkata. Her mother was sister of my spouse. They both inherited bad temper superstition and belief system of dark powers - Living God men and women, Pirh, Jinn, Godhoods in RKM, Satya Sai Baba and 100s of temples deities all over India and elaborate image worshipping at home for fictitious power and material benefits. They also inherited lot of diseases from their parents side. Most deplorable and vexing is lust for money.

It is all in contrast with simplicity that was inborn for Rumi. She remained imaginative and her world could not be made complex by her parents and their associates. They resorted to lot of treatment for her by superior power to make her part of themselves. She was not cured. Her sister caught on the sophistication of her family. She studied Pre Med in Boston and Medicine in Cambridge. She is married but had some problems - I do not know. She was operated this year but yet not very mobile. Her husband too is doing residency.  Rumi on her own ability did Bachelors and Masters in Library science.

Pompously about 5  or 6 years back they announced Rumi's marriage with some UK resident Indian boy doing Medicine there. After a conversation with her future husband she decided to withdraw her consent for marriage. The boy wanted her to live in Kolkata and he wished to return to India. This was her first rebellion against her parents. No Matter What. She started doing part time job and started living alone away from her parents. It took couple of years but she came to final terms with her as independent. Truly.

I heard, she was declared autistics by her parents. She is 37 now. I of course do not know how this declaration is profitable for her family. She still sings beautifully in both english and bengali. She is still simple and by herself. She has inherent disability to be sophisticated. She is extremely good mannered and has no temper. She takes care of herself and cares as much for her parents. She earns her living. She is well groomed and simple. Innocent and beautiful. She lives separately away from her parents and sister wherever she is working.

The most I like about her is her reliance on herself no matter what opinion of others hold about her including her parents. She has no inferiority or superiority complex.

She is independent  and living alone - truly and many years now. Here parents have flat in Kolkata three decades now. They live there at least three months every year. Otherwise they go on tour. Rumi never accompanies them.

Among all my relations in their generation, She is my pride my love and the most honorable.
