childhood

in my childhood i lived in chittaranjan. chittaranjan most streets are numbered except one. Prashanta avenue where lived for nearly ten years. another 5 years in street number 1. in this street quarter number 1A lived my best friend then subrata along with his 10 siblings and many goats. he was not studying in my school and one year senior. both were attending the school leaving final on the same year. his was higher secondary 11 year school leaving and mine was high school leaving a 10 year episode. mine was morning school and his was day school in the same building.

my neighbor ever since i remember was khuku malabika first daughter of haraprashad banerji. i was very fond of khuku's mother who used to tell us stories of films. one such film was bahauddin huyen. it was about a woman who had 20 children. she was laughing beautiful woman. i was separated by not so wide drain. i used to wait to be assisted to cross the drain to reach her house. khuku was my classmate. we used to go to a far away school. i think she stood third in class one. haraptashad da was very energetic guy. we had school fee of 1.62 rupee for the tiffin provided to us during recess. she was given some rupee five note but the teacher refused saying that she had no change. next day to irritate her haraprasad da sent 162 one paisa coin. khuku continued to have 8 siblings and quite responsible for their upbringing.  she could not go to high school. they went to larger quarter to live away from us long before that.

when i was in class four barda left job and we became nomads and started living in one room along with some other family. one such family we lived was mukherji da. khokon boudi mitali and khokon's pishi. we were chhodi did mema and lali, a fat chicken. lali was not able to fly and had to be carried to her den. the living in the house had many pleasant memories although we only lived for six months. here i was among many school friends - biswanath sudip soumbhik etc. i also learnt cycling. from here we went to live in street number one.

shyamal from primary school was studied with me in high school in my last two years. he was son of police chief of chittaranjan. they used to live near by. his elder sister too was our classmate in our last year at primary. shyamal was extremely good sprinter. he used to beat me by more than a yard. we spent lot of time together in primary. i expected in the annual meet for all school he would get prize. although i was too representing my school but he was ace. he did not get any prize. at the high school he joined me at class nine. he did well till test for two years. but i got national scholarship at school leaving he did not. for me i was not expecting. i was not at all competitive.

while in college i met met khokon biswanath but i could not trace shyamal. biswanath become a physician and he still practices in rupnarayanpur a city near chittaranjan. except him i could trace nne from my school.

i did one year college in shillong. most of my days of schooling i was moving alone and exploring my neighborhood. in college in shillong i had a mate kamal. he was doing puc second time. it appears he took some more time to complete his puc. he was living with his uncle who was postmaster. subrata khokon kamal and many of my classmates did engineering.
