he would have gone unknown to internet unless Ramakrishna's account was written day to day for many decades by Master a disciple of his. It was 1000 plus pages. Totapuri was in it in 300 pages. He was supposed to taught him - Nirvikalpa Samadhi - as popularized by Adi Sankara.
observing one's own world without further contemplation.
He only stayed for 11 months at Dakshineswar when was not supposed to be in any place for more than 4 nights. He was a naked mendicant and also principal of a school for Naga Sanyasi. the naked ones.
The reason I remember him for my vow of silence no matter what.
he had two belongings - no clothes. both metallic - an iron to work with fire and a copper vessel for holding water. Once when sitting under a groove before a fire with Ramakrishna his disciple a temple worker approached the fire for lighting his biri. Totapuri got wild and drove away the person from taking a burning charcoal. He also used to take deep care for his utensils. His Komandulu the copper vessel for holding water used to shine like a gold vessel.
Ramakrishna asked him: you have self realization, then how come you chased away a mere ignorant man from taking a charcoal from the fire?
None saw Totapuri losing his temper ever after.
I also remember another story from Mahabharata Kurukshetra war. Krishna who advised Arjun in Gita that he cannot abandon his duty to fight. He had to go through the whole agony of it. It is his karmafal. Karma. Arjuna asked him that he could utter his philosophy when he is not fighting. Krishna said that far from it he is in midst of it. All the arrows intended for Arjuna goes past him and he is in open not under cover as his chariot driver. Further he has the responsibility to keep Arjun unhurt. Shortly after he was totally irritated by Bhishma who continually attacked Krisna. Krishna forgot his public pledge that he is not going to be fighting in this war of Dharma. He is independent of the world. He picked up a wheel of his chariot and ran to destroy Bhisma. Bhisma gave up fighting and reminded his pledge of independence.
time and again I shall forget my pledge and my world won't surely I remind me of my permanent absence in my illusory world created by my own hypotheses resulting in my extreme suffering without recess.
I must keep my promise of silence and not protect or prevent me from getting hurt - IN FUTURE. Future and past are far from truth ~ now that is not my hypothesis.
All without exception ~ me my world my suffering and time is illusion - world is indecipherable ~ predictions are meaningless. They never shall be true. I have no option but regard them so. I can only show off by observing my silence and ignoring all threats of future ~ despite all my failures in the past to keep my silence of immunity; I must learn no lessons from my failure.
I am absolute absent and I am not any of my illusions or dream or hypothesis. I cannot imagine myself. my world must vanish and do vanish before me.
truth has no option but be unaffected unreasonable and good always despite the surrounding permanent hell.
